This Summer we have partnered with Mad Science to bring a full STEAM experience to our students. To kick off the Summer we have a huge exciting opening show and we will wrap summer up with an end of summer blow out. However every week of summer, each child will participate in small group activities with Mad Science and learn all there is to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Each student will be taking home an activity to bring home and explore with their families. Summer theme activities: Rainbow/Colors - Dry Ice Capades - Manipulate matter in all of its three states! Melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! Use your Thermocolor Cup™ to test the temperature of liquid matter in your home and watch it change color with the temperature! Aloha - Tiki Masks - Let’s set sail for the South Pacific! The people of the Polynesian islands believed that they needed to stay connected with nature in order to live comfortably. They created “tikis”, or carvings, to connect with personifications of the forces of nature. We will think about our connections with nature and design tiki masks for our homes. Under the Sea - Life in the Sea – What is life like under the ocean’s surface? What kind of animals and plants are found in the sea? Examine and investigate starfish, sea urchins and other sea creatures. Learn about buoyancy and adaptation. Make your own Cartesian diver and find out what humans must do in order to explore the deep, dark depths of our planet’s oceans. Tropical Vacation - Watercolor Sharks and Fish - The streamlined shapes of sharks and fishes are perfect for living under water. Kids use simple shapes to draw them swimming in a coral reef. Then they add watercolor paint to create a colorful scene under the sea and learn about Eugenie Clark, who was known as “The Shark Lady” because of all the research and work she did to promote marine conservation. Rockstar - Sonic Sounds - Discover sound, sound waves and the way household items can be used to create amazing movie effects. Use our multi-effects processor to hear your altered voice. This is an hour filled with lots of cool special effects… Red, White & Blue - Comic Book Heroes - We’re dressing up our very own superhero! Superheroes look their best when drawn in action poses, with faces that tell their story. We have superhero templates and fashion textiles to kick-start the ultimate comic book star! Christmas in July - Movie Effects - Grab your popcorn but don’t sit back! We’re going to learn first-hand how advances in science and technology make our favorite special effects possible! Children will use instant snow for a holiday surprise! It’s Einstein meets Spielberg in a class of 3…2…1…action! Camp Out - Big Foot - Calling all mythical creature enthusiasts! Let’s explore the world of the mysterious Yeti, Sasquatch and Bigfoot! We will learn about the cultural history and legends surrounding these elusive beasts. Then, we will use our imaginations to sculpt them in forests or mountaintops. Sports - Smelly Science - The science of scents is in the air! Children will learn about our sense of smell and put their noses to the test as they experiment with the chemistry of aromas. From human nasal passages to animal adaptations, from enticing aromas to stinky stenches, the nose knows! Jungle2Jungle - Elephant Silhouettes - Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth! Kids learn about these gentle giants and the conservationists who are working to protect them, while using a silhouette painting technique to create elephant and tree shadows on a canvas sunset background. Retro/Disco - Glow Show - Amazing discoveries will come to light in this class on things that glow bright in the dark! Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology—including the printing of money! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
